Driveways

Residential Properties: Driveway permits are required along privately-owned and town-owned roads. You may apply for a Driveway Permit with the Public Works Department, using the Driveway Permit Application. You should contact the Public Works Department directly to file the application.

Commercial Properties: Driveway permits are required for commercial properties along private, town and state roads. For commercial properties along state-owned roads, an Entrance Permit through the Department of Transportation is also generally required. For commercial properties and uses, the driveway locaiton should be clearly shown on proposed plans for the Planning Board's consideration of site plan and subdivision review applications. If any portion of a driveway area is proposed to change from a Planning Board approval, a revision to the originally approved Planning Board application is required, per sections 33-140 and/or 41-182 of the Town's ordinances.

Residential and Commercial Properties in the Shoreland Zones: In addition to the above requirements - Driveway coverage (including impervious pavers) count toward non-vegetated coverage in the shoreland zones throughout the Town of Eliot. Therefore, when planning the site, the percentage of driveway on the lot is calculated toward the total percentage of lot that may be covered, which is generally twenty percent. The definition of non-vegetated coverage is found in section 1-2 of the Town's ordinances.
