Part-Time Recreation Employee


The Community Service Department is accepting applications for a part-time Recreation employee to assist with various duties and responsibilities within the department and as directed by the Community Service Department Director.

Must be 18 years old, have a valid driver's license. Must be able to work flexible hours; to include nights and weekends.

Pay for this position is $15.00/hour. This is a non-union position, no benefits included.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Community Service Officer- Police Department (seasonal position)

The Town of Eliot, Maine is seeking a motivated, recreational enthusiast for a seasonal Community Service Officer (CSO) to monitor activities at the Eliot Boat Basin and collect fees.   The Boat Basin is a place where individuals can enjoy recreational boating for the day. Successful candidate would enjoy working outdoors, and have the ability to multi-task.

 The Community Service Officer acts as a liaison between the police and public, promoting the Town of Eliot and providing essential services in a friendly and positive manner to the public is of the utmost importance. 

Responsibilities:  The purpose of the Community Service Officer (CSO) is to monitor and control traffic flow.  Ensure that all motorists are in compliance with parking regulations, collection of fees and help guest at the Boat Basin with general questions and guidance. 

Education and Experience:  Minimum of a High School diploma. Ability to communicate and interact with the public effectively. Cash handling and reconciliation of funds experience preferred. 

Special Requirements: Valid Class C Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

Full-Time Police Officer

The Town of Eliot, Maine is seeking a Police Officer to fill the full-time 40 hour/4-day work/ 10-hour shifts as an Eliot Patrolman.  Will consider PT position as well.

The Town of Eliot is mostly a residential seaside community, with commercial on the major Route of 236 connecting Kittery to the Berwicks, Eliot has a population of about 7500, located off I-95 about 10 minutes north of Portsmouth, NH and 45 minutes south of Portland, ME.  Patrolling 32 miles of roadway, consisting of State, Town and Privately owned roads.

Officers work 4 days on, 3 days off, 10-hour shifts. The department has 5 full-time officers, 1 School Resource Officer, Sergeant, and Chief.  If you are looking for an independent working environment with great leadership, and TEAM workforce environment, the Town of Eliot, Police Department needs you and your experience.  This position is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement.  The town offers competitive pay, including shift differentials, vacation, sick, comp. time and generous health/dental/ life insurance package and 20 year- Maine State Retirement for Police Officers.

Responsibilities: The Patrolman performs routine and specialized police law enforcement work to protect lives and property and the prevention and suppression of crimes within the Town of Eliot in carrying out the enforcement of state and federal laws and local Bylaws.  The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties. 

Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent apprentice level of trade knowledge; one to three (1-3) years of prior work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Special Position Requirements: Preference will be given to those applicants who have completed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s (MCJA)

  • ALERT test or be eligible to receive a waiver from MCJA
  • Be a minimum of 21 years old (or 20 years old with at least 60 college credit hours
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Pass a thorough background and financial check; polygraph exam, and psychological test
  • Be in good physical condition/health; pass a physical agility assessment test based on the MCJA physical agility pre-entrance test.

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Public Works Department Equipment Operator/ Laborer

The Town of Eliot, Maine is hiring a full-time- Public Works Department Equipment Operator/ Laborer.   This position plays an important part of successful operations in the department. 

Responsibilities:

  • Operates assigned departmental equipment which include; backhoe, front end loader, commercial dump truck, hand and power tools used in the completion of a wide range of public works projects in the maintenance of town buildings and grounds.
  • Will participate in the Town’s snow and ice removal program.
  • Performs physical labor on projects using special equipment to dig ditches and trenches, directing traffic, removal of trees, roadway patching, maintenance and cleaning of town equipment.
  • Attends training sessions in occupational safety and requirements of equipment operations.
  • Assist in summer maintenance of parks, town buildings and road sides
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director, when necessary 

Education and Experience:  Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent; up to one (1-3) years of prior work experience preferably with DPW -related equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Special Requirements: Position requires a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). As a condition of employment, required to complete a pre-employment physical examination and participate in the Town's Random Drug Testing Program and must complete a physical examination.

Seasonal Summer Maintenance Position

The Town of Eliot, is seeking a Seasonal Summer Maintenance Position. This position will be responsible for mowing and trimming all the town parks, town office, intersections, some cemeteries and other tasks assigned.  This position will work 32-35 hours a week Monday- Friday, May - September.  This position may occasionally assist the Public Works staff when necessary.  This position does not offer benefits, but does receive PTO under MPEL (Maine Paid Employee Leave) 

 KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of general machine maintenance. • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and general public. • Working knowledge of lawn mowers, lawn tractors, hedge trimmers, grass trimmers, dump trucks, road sweeping, vibratory compactors, and chain saws. • Working knowledge of pruning equipment, shovels, rakes, hoes, push brooms, wheel barrows, pole drivers. • Familiar with carpentry and masonry tool. 

REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma, GED, or current student with an active Class C driver’s license.  A minimum of one year’s experience with lawn maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills for this position.
