Things to know:

The Town Clerk’s office offers many services for the residents of our Town. Our staff is trained to assist the residents of Eliot with all of their registration and licensing needs. This includes all motor vehicle and recreational vehicle registrations and the issuance of dog and Inland Fisheries & Wildlife licenses.

The Clerk’s Office also handles all vital records for the Town which includes the issuance of marriage licenses and the recording of all births and deaths.

Currently checks and cash are the only form of payment accepted. We are not set up for debit or credit card transactions. There is a $15.00 penalty fee for any returned check. Return check fees could increase without notice.

 

Information about Vehicle Registration, Insurance, and Inspections in Maine

Maine Law requires that a Maine motor vehicle registration be applied for within 30 days of residence being declared or established.

Maine law requires that every owner and operator of a motor vehicle maintain motor vehicle liability insurance and present evidence upon request of a law enforcement officer as well as to a Motor Vehicle Agent at the time of registration.

All motor vehicles bearing a Maine Registration must have a current inspection before being operated on any public way. These inspections must be done at an official inspection station once a year.

New Vehicle Registration Procedure:

If purchased or leased in Maine you will need the following:

Dealer Sale - green sales tax form, blue title application form, and window sticker (for new vehicles).

Private Sale - bill of sale, title & release of lien form if applicable.

*if transferring plates from a vehicle currently registered, please bring that current registration

*as stated above proof of insurance must be provided

If purchased out of state you will need the following:

Dealer Sale - bill of sale or lease agreement, blue title application form or title (required on all vehicles fifteen years old or newer), window sticker (for new vehicles).

Private Sale - bill of sale, title (required on all vehicles 15 years old or newer). If you traded in a vehicle for a new one, bring in your old registration.

Re-Registration Procedure:  

Please bring your most current registration, proof of insurance and current mileage.

 

Rapid Renewal:

This online service allows residents to renew their vehicle registration via the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can pay by either credit card or electronic check. A printed out confirmation of your renewal is available for proof of registration and your registration along with the stickers will arrive in the mail within a few days. Have your most current registration, proof of insurance and current mileage available to complete the transaction.

 Registering a vehicle for Military Personnel who are on Active Duty stationed in Maine

These items are always required for Active Duty Military:

Military ID

Current Drivers License

Statement of Fact (MV#7): Available at Clerk’s Office

If the vehicle is currently registered in another state, the following items are required:

Current registration

If you own your vehicle, the title is required.

If you have a lien holder, you must supply us with the name and address of the financial institution.

 DOGS 

All dogs housed in the State of Maine must be licensed in the town that they reside in. A current rabies certificate is required for licensing purposes. If the dog has been spayed or neutered, documentation from a veterinarian proving this is also required.

Licensing Fees: Altered: $6.00 Non-Altered: $11.00.

Dog licenses are issued by the calendar year expiring December 31st. The renewal licenses become available just prior to the New Year in mid October. Once a dog has an established license with the Town his/her license must be renewed annually. If the license is not renewed by January 31st a late fee of $15.00 will be assessed, further penalties will follow if the dog goes unlicensed past March 31st.

INLAND FISHERIES LICENSING AND RECREATIONAL VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS

Eliot’s outdoor sporting enthusiasts are able to fill all of their licensing and registration needs at the Town Clerk’s Office. The staff is fully trained on the issuance of all IF&W Licenses and registrations on Watercraft, Snowmobiles and ATV’s.

Residents can also purchase licenses and renew snowmobile and ATV registrations online through MOSES (Maine Online Sportsman’s Electronic System). This online service is available by accessing the links below.

Birth Marriage Death

        

The Town Clerk’s Office records and maintains all birth, marriage and death records for the residents of Eliot when the event occurs within the State of Maine.

To request a certified copy of a vital record, you must submit a request in writing to the Clerk’s Office either in person or by mail.

VOTER REGISTRATION

As of June 30, 2006 there were 5,277 registered voters in the Town of Eliot. With the combination of additions and deletions to the voter list between July and June, we had an increase of 216 voters from the previous year. Of the 5, 277 registered voters there are 2,238 voters who are not enrolled in a political party, 1, 655 enrolled as Republicans, 1,282 enrolled as Democrats and 102 enrolled in the Green Independent Party.

Any resident may register to vote at the Town Clerk’s Office during normal business hours. It is required that proof of identity as well proof of residency be shown at the time of registration. You may also register to vote at the Registrar’s table on Election Day with the appropriate identification and residency requirements.

Military Personnel and their family members should request an absentee ballot from the state that they are a legal resident of and registered to vote in.
