Eliot Town Seal's outer background is a light gray. A ship's wheel surrounds a light background containing a brown ship representing Eliot shipbuilders past and present.
On the ship's square mainsail are red bricks, representing the Town's brick business which flourished in the 1800's. Bricks made from Eliot soil were used throughout New England. Below the bricks are yellow wheat symbolizing the farmers who worked Eliot's land. Beneath the wheat is a gray fish, for the fisherman of the Town. The date of 1810 is the year Eliot was incorporated.

ELIOT TOWN GOVERNMENT.

Eliot has a Town Meeting form of government. This means that each registered voter in the town has an active and direct right to participate in Town decisions. We have not delegated our vote to others which In Eliot, each vote does count and each citizen can publicly address his fellow citizens to voice his views. At the annual Town Meeting questions (articles) requiring votes are raised by the Selectmen or individual citizens. After the annual Town Meeting, the Town Officers are obligated to oversee the Town and act on the questions raised as determined by the vote on the articles at the Town Meeting.

Some of the positions in the town are "elective" which means the citizens actually vote to see who will hold that position. Other positions in the town are "appointive" which means those we elect to serve in certain positions appoint others to serve under them.

The Elective Branch consists of:  The 5 member Board of Selectmen

  • A Chairman of the Selectmen
  • Vice Chairman of the Selectmen
  • Secretary to the Board
  • Two regular members
Note:  All Selectmen are Overseer's of the Poor

The Road Commissioner,   The Budget   Committee
