Recyling is mandatory in the Town of Eliot. Each of us must be responsible
and do our part to recycle and process our own trash. The more we pull out of
the waste stream, the more money we save. The Eliot Transfer Station saves
thousands of dollars each year through our recycling efforts.
Each vehicle registered in Eliot will be issued a Transfer Station Permit.
These expire annually every July to a new year. Vehicles not registered in
Eliot will have to get a permit from the Eliot Board of Selectmen. Temporary
Permits can be issued at the Town Hall or from the Manager at the Transfer
Station. The information below are things we recycle or take in at the
Transfer Station.
GLASS: We take all colored glass, bottles; returnable or
non-returnable. They need to be washed, cleaned, and put in their marked
area.
Plastic Bottles: At this time, we take all returnable plastic
bottles. Clear milk jugs and water jugs are processed in the 1st bailer by
the door and colored #2 plastic goes in the rack outside. (Laundry jugs,
white hood jugs, etc must be cleaned and rinsed out)
Cardboard: Cardboard goes into the 2nd bailer. It needs to be dry
and clean.
E-Waste: E-Waste is television, computers, electrical parts, etc.
These can no longer go in our trash. There is a fee for this material because
of hazardous waste in them. They have to be hauled off by an experience
hauler.
Steel: Most steel can go into the steel pile at no charge. There is
a charge for white goods, washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners,
refrigerators, dishwashers, furnaces, freezers, de-humidifiers, and hot water
heaters. Some of these units need to be re-processed before put into steel
pile. All motors, lawn mowers, and transmissions need to have the oil drained
before dumping. There is a $10.00 fee for most of these units.
Brush Pile: Presently we burn brush and clean painted wood. This
may stop due to the cost of having the ash removed. We are looking at other
options to run the burn pit.
Aluminum Cans: We take returnable and non-returnable cans, go into
#3 bailer.
Paper: Paper is one of the things we would like to get out of the
waste stream. It weighs a great deal and is recyclable. We take a great deal
of paper waste, all paper, newspapers, junk mail flyers, telephone books,
magazines, catalogs, etc.
Salvation Army Bins: These bins can be used for toys, clean
clothes, boots, shoes, and complete games.
Motor Oil and Filter Bin: We take clean motor oil and oil filters.
Hazardous Waste: Each year Eliot holds a Hazardous Waste Day. On
this day, you can bring in household hazardous wast material such as oil base
paints, gas, etc.
Bulky Waste: We have a demo can to remove bulky waste. This is a
user fee demo can for sofas, living room chairs, mattresses, box springs,
carpets, and construction debris. See attendant for fee schedule.
Mulch Pile: This is for grass, leaves, and other compost material.
Shingles: We take shingles from Eliot residents only. There is a
user fee charge for this material.
Clear Bags: It is mandatory to use clear bags at the Eliot Transfer
Station. Bags can be purchased at the Transfer Station. No black bags are
allowed. |
